Kim Young-sook Master received World Martial Arts Medal'

Master Kim Tae-sook, who has spread taekwondo to US police and middle and high school students, received the World Martial Arts Medal, presented by the World Martial Arts Federation.

At the World Martial Arts Medal Award Ceremony held at George Mason University's Manassas Campus on the 19th, Master Kim Young-sook was recognized for his contribution to the development of martial arts.

Kim Young-sook, who won the Presidential Award Platinum Award, the highest award among US presidential sports awards, and a commendation from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, is the "Taekwondo Mother." In 1970, Korea opened the first women-only Taekwondo gym, and in 1975, founded Ewha Womans University Taekwondo. He also served as the first female taekwondo instructor of the 8th US Army, the first female coach of the national taekwondo team, and the first female coach of the first taekwondo team in Korea.

▶ 세계무술고수총연맹 수여

미국 경찰과 중·고등학생에게 태권도를 전파해온 월드태권도장 김영숙 사범이 세계무술고수총연맹(총재 권호열)이 수여하는 세계무술 무공훈장을 받았다.
지난달 19일 조지메이슨대학교 매나사스 캠퍼스에서 열린 세계무술영웅훈장, 무술무공훈장 및 표창장 수여식에서 김영숙 사범은 무술 최고 고단자이며 훌륭한 인격을 갖춘 무술의 고수로 무술 발전에 이바지한 공로를 인정받아 ‘무공훈장’을 받았다.

이날 김영숙 사범과 함께 세계무술무공훈장을 받은 무술 고수들을 총 39명으로 김태연 회장, 70년대 대표 무술 영화배우 바비 김씨, 베이지역 출신으로 코테 마데리 시의원을 역임했던 양진석 WTF 전 사무총장 등이 받았다.

미국 대통령 체육표창 중 최고상인 ‘프레지덴셜 챔피언 플래티넘 어워드’를 수상했고 문화체육관광부장관으로부터 표창장을 받은 김영숙 사범은 ‘태권도의 대모’다. 1970년 한국 최초로 여성 전용 태권도 체육관을 개관했고, 1975년 이화여대 태권도부를 창설했다. 또 미8군 헌병대의 최초 여성 태권도 교관, 국가대표 태권도팀 최초 여성 코치, 한인 최초 미국 태권도대표팀 여성 코치 등을 역임했다.
